Every year, Lapoint Elementary holds a program to celebrate local military veterans for Veterans Day. The school’s own student council with advisers, Evvi Richens and April Wallen, organizes the program each year.

All of the students at Lapoint Elementary completed patriotic art projects, which were put up for display during the program by Lapoint’s art teacher, Melissa Deletant.

The program included patriotic piano pieces performed by fifth grade teacher, Ranell Wakefield, and media specialist/student council advisor, April Wallen. Red Spirit performed several traditional Native American songs.

Joy Grant, wife of veteran Jonas Grant, spoke about representing war mothers and war families from local communities and throughout the United States who have lost a veteran and had to make sacrifices themselves.

The entire student body sang “We Honor Those Who Served” together to the veterans in attendance as well as those who were unable to attend or have passed on as a “thank you” for their service and sacrifice.

Principal Dennis Atkin gave some history on the origin of military dog tags and then presented special “thank you” dog tags to the grandchildren or great-grandchildren of local veterans, who, after their service, went on to raise families and live into old age and have since passed away. One set was given to Amarius Tendoy, Krispin Reed and Peter Maile in honor of their grandfather, Donald Reed.

Another set was given to Terilyn and Rope Williams in honor of their great-grandfather, Howard Allen. Taylor Kurtz received a set in honor of her great-grandfather, Loris Wooley.

Veterans in attendance were Jimmy Anderson - Air Force, Michael Arrowchis, Sr. - Navy, Kelly Crozier, Sr. - Army, Chuck Cunningham - Navy Air Corps, Jonas Grant - Army, Kenny Hennefer - Army, Stephany Huber - Army, Ferdinand Manning, Jr. - Army, Clifford Merkley - Army National Guard, Dennis Montgomery - Army, Don Jon Reed - Army and Ronald Stump - Army.

There was also a table displaying photos brought in by students of veterans who were not in attendance.
