Free Fishing Day this Saturday, June 8

Free Fishing Day to be held this Saturday, June 8. The event allows anyone to fish at any public waterbody in Utah without a license.

Utah’s' annual Free Fishing Day set for this Saturday, June 8. The event allows anyone to fish at any public waterbody in Utah without a fishing license.

Free Fishing Day provides the perfect opportunity to introduce someone to fishing. Fishing makes for a great family activity and is the perfect time to introduce your children to fishing while getting them outdoors. It’s a great day to not only introduce someone to fishing. It's also a fun time for experienced anglers as well.

“Because you don’t need a license to fish that day, it’s the perfect time to take someone fishing with you and introduce them to the sport,” Randy Oplinger, sport fisheries coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR), said. “Early June is one of the best times to fish in Utah. All of the fish in the state, both warm-water and cold-water fish, are active and willing to bite this time of the year.”

In conjunction with the Free Fishing Day, the DWR is hosting fishing clinics where instructors will provide fishing tips and fishing equipment. You can check out of one of the DWR fishing events scheduled at waterbodies around Utah that day.

“At most of the events, equipment will be available for people to use,” Oplinger said. “Volunteers will also be on hand to help you and your children fish. Also, many of these waters will be stocked with fish before the event so there should be plenty of fish to catch.”

The following two events will be held in Northeastern Utah on Saturday:

Lower Stillwater Pond in Hanna, Duchesne County

This event is set to run from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Lower Stillwater Pond on Forest Road 134 near Duchesne and will be hosted by the DWR and the U.S. Forest Service. This is a Blue-Ribbon Fishery and includes a complex of several ponds that have a variety of fish species, including some decent sized fish, making this a great fishing area for both beginners and experienced anglers. A children’s fishing derby will take place at the event, complete with snacks and prizes. Several educational mini-clinics and a visit from Smokey Bear will also be offered.

An aquatics biologist from the Whiterocks State Fish Hatchery is bringing a fish-stocking truck to the pond to demonstrate how fish are stocked into ponds throughout the region.

To get to Lower Stillwater Pond drive north on Utah State Route 87 from Duchesne and turn left onto 21000 West then continue on that road into Mountain Home. Then, turn left on 6750 North/Rock Creek Road, which turns into Forest Road 134, and follow the road until you get to Lower Stillwater Pond.
