HEBER CITY – With five individual state titles at the Utah High School State Finals Rodeo last week, the Uintah Basin rodeo club dominated the rest of the competition in Heber City.
Dean Thompson (bareback), Dallie Bastian (breakaway), Keni Labrum (goat tying) and Cash Robb (steer wrestling) all celebrated a state championship on Saturday night in the finals at the Wasatch County Events Center.
Sydney Davis won her title earlier in the week in the reined cow horse event. The top four in each event qualified for the National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) set for the middle of next month in Rock Springs, Wyoming.
Other Uintah Basin rodeo members headed to Rock Springs are Kamryn Carlsen (second/barrel racing), Jate Frost (third/bull riding); Sommer Amos (third/girls cutting); Sydney Davis (fourth/girls cutting) and Dalton Van (second/trap shooting).
Labrum entered the shot go (finals) in the No. 1 position and she didn't drop off at all in the finals after putting down a time of 8.160 seconds.
“I kind of messed up a little bit, but I still had a pretty good run,” Labrum explained. “The time seemed about right.”
With the top position, Labrum was the final cowgirl to perform in her event.
“It was nerve racking a little bit, but it was kind of a blessing at the same time,” Labrum said. “It's an honor to be the last person.”
Labrum finished the year with 142 points. Cedar's Staheli Adams was second (127.50 points) and Maddie Roche from the Spikers finished third (117 points).
“The competition is very good,” Labrum added.
This will be the first trip to the NHFR for Labrum after finishing fifth-place at state for the last two years.
“It's super exciting,” Labrum said. “That has been one of my goals since I started.”
Robb now has two straight state steer wrestling titles under his belt. He said his hard work in-between rodeos was the difference that lifted him into the top.
Robb finished the year with 128 points. Elijah Dansie from Lehi was second (122.50 points) and Kale Lamb from Lehi placed third (108 points).
“I try not to think about being the defending champion,” Robb said. “I just go make the run that I can make.”
In breakaway roping, Dallie Bastian and Kash Gay from the Spikers finished first deadlocked with 118 points.
“It's pretty cool to be a state champion,” Dallie said. “I'm just happy that I had the opportunity to do good.”
Dallie just completed her first year of high school to make the title even more special.
“I'm so grateful to win it as a freshman,” Dallie added. “Heading into the season I wasn't thinking anything big. I just wanted to do my best.”
In the finals, Dallie finished with a time of 2.930 seconds to lock up her No. 1 position.
“It was cool to be the last one out in the finals,” Dallie added.
Dallie was thrilled to see her sister, Jaicee, finish fourth in breakaway to join her at the NHFR.
“It's pretty awesome that we are both going,” Dallie said.
Thompson clinched his bareback title with a 70-point ride. Earlier in the week he had a 69-point ride and a 77-point ride to claim his trip to Rock Springs. Thompson scored a total of 148 points on the season. Dixie's Bubba Holcomb finish second with 142 points.
