Vernal American Legion Post 11 is back after a year absence.

Manager Dan Mortensen said 23 players have assembled together to play competitive baseball with other teams around the state this summer.

The home games will be played on the Uintah High School baseball field. Games are seven-inning affairs.

“We are pretty excited about it,” Mortensen said. “It's just all the kids who played on the high school team. We are going to be a little younger than most of the other teams. This is just an extension of the high school program. The school district was nice enough to let us use the fields. We are in a tough region.”

Vernal has been stacked into the Southern Division, which is loaded with other teams.

“Most of them are 6A schools,” Mortensen explained.

Teams in the Vernal's division are Alta, Highland, Judge Memorial, Skyline, Herriman, Corner Canyon, Taylorsville, Tooele, Timpanogos, Salem Hills, Lone Peak, Springville, West Lake, Pleasant Grove, Helper, St. George, Dixie, Snow Canyon and Roosevelt.

Vernal's home opener is against Snow Canyon in a doubleheader on June 14. The first pitch will be thrown at 10 a.m. Vernal will host Dixie on June 15 at 10 a.m. The season will be highlighted with 12 home games.

The top 16 teams from the Southern Division advance into the opening round of the state. The top four then continue on into the state tournament.

“It will be a good feat if you finish in the top four in our division,” Mortensen added.

Mortensen explained one of Vernal's strength this season is the speed on the base paths.

“Almost every kid on our team has speed. Our speed will help us get to the fly balls,” Mortensen said. “We have more pitchers than we have had in the past. We probably have eight pitchers where in the past we have had only two.”

The manager said American Legion helps supports the team Vernal will be wearing blue and gray uniforms this summer.

Mortensen said Rob Decol is the assistant manager. Matt Massey is the head coach. His assistant coaches are Bart Murray, Brent Jensen and JR Hacking.

“We are all on the same page for baseball,” Mortensen said.
